Packing Tips

To have a successful move, both organization and planning ahead are key. In need of packing inspiration? Consult our packing tips and suggestions.

TIP #1
Plan Ahead. Packing is so much easier when it’s done ahead of time. Begin by gathering together items such as sturdy boxes, Bubble Wrap, packing paper, tape, markers and protective coverings for the furniture.

TIP #2
Seal Boxes. All boxes should be sealed tightly with sturdy packing tape. This will prevent dust and other debris from entering and damaging the packaged items.

TIP #3
Protect Furniture. Furniture legs should be wrapped in Bubble Wrap to prevent scratching. Keep the slipcovers on upholstered chairs when moving and protect them with plastic coverings. Place tape around the bed rails and label in order to make assembly easy after the move. Protect mattresses from dirt and debris during storage with plastic coverings.

Tip #4
Label Boxes. To make the boxes easy to identify, label them on each side. Put together a list for later reference. If there are any fragile items, make sure they are clearly marked and kept away from the heavier items.

TIP #5
Use Valuable Space. Dresser drawers and appliances have valuable space and can be used to store smaller things such as linens, towels and delicate items. Packing paper and towels can be utilized to keep the items secure while in the drawers.

TIP #6
Learn to Pack. Try using the same size boxes when moving and fill them to the top. Take precautions to avoid over packing to prevent the heavy cartons from tipping over. Under packed boxes can collapse when half full, so take extra care to keep them filled appropriately. Newspaper, Bubble Wrap, towels and linens can be used to fill in vacant spaces. Seal the cartons tightly once they are filled.

TIP #7
Choose Small Cartons for Heavy Items. Heavier items like tools and books should be placed in a smaller container. Limit the weight to 30 lbs. and less to make the items easier to handle and lift.

TIP #8
Clean Appliances Before Storage. Appliances should be cleaned and secured before moving. Protect any moveable parts with paper or extra padding and tape the doors shut. Remember to open them once they’ve been transported to their final destination.

TIP #9
Protect Books. To keep books from becoming worn and damaged while in transit, pack them flat. Fill any empty spaces with Bubble Wrap, packing paper or clean towels.

TIP #10
Keep Dishes and Glassware Protected. Packing paper, newspaper and Bubble Wrap provide extra protection to glassware and dishes during a move. Additional paper in the bottom and tops of the boxes acts as extra cushion and keeps the items safe. Dishes and glasses should also be wrapped individually. When placing the wrapped plates in the boxes, stack them on the edge for further protection.

TIP #11
Move Clothes and Draperies. Clothes and draperies should be left hanging in wardrobe containers. This will help protect the items and prevent staining and wrinkling while being transported.

TIP #12
Transport Lampshades and Lamps. Lighting fixtures such as lamps and lampshades should be moved in separate boxes using clean packing paper or Bubble Wrap.

TIP #13
Pad Delicate Items. Delicate items such as mirrors and artwork should be padded and placed in a specially marked box.
